'THE BEST MIRACLE'
By: Jenna

AUTHOR'S NOTES: This fic was written for a plea by Spookygirl05 at the Haven for something sappy. I don't know if this was exactly what you were looking for, but here hear you go. ;)

Her heels clicked against the concrete as she walked out of the office. Safely tucked into her arms was a box filled with special momentos she had gathered over the past nine years. She had been doing a lot of thinking recently, about her future with the X-Files. With their baby on the way and Mulder returned, she had more important priorities in her life. Mulder had told her as much. After his release from the hospital, they had went to his apartment, and the tension had been so palpable. Of course, the danger he had been in on the oil rig had heightened her sense of fear, and all the tension was forgotten. Concern replaced in its wake. She had been afraid he would never make it back to her again. It was then and there she decided to ask him if he would help her in Lamaze classes. When he came home, she offered to make him dinner at her place the following night. After all, he no longer had a job. It wouldn't be as if he had anything pressing to get home to.

FOLLOWING NIGHT
8:00 p.m.

To her surprise, he was right on time as his knock reverberated on the door. Looking out the peephole, she moved aside to allow him entrance.

"Hello, Scully. I brought us a bottle of sparkling cider." He handed it to her and shrugged out of his leather jacket, carefully placing it upon the coat hook.

She smiled at his thoughtfulness. "Thank you, Mulder. I was hoping for some of this soon, especially since I can't drink alcohol."

Grinning back at her, he spoke softly. "Yeah, I figured as much." He followed her to the kitchen as she proceeded to finish getting the salad from the fridge.

She quickly turned to face him. "Mulder, before we eat, I want to let you know the real reason for this invitation."

"Yes? Scully, has the cancer come back? You aren't sick again, are you?" His confusion and concern for her was crystal clear on his face.

"No, Mulder. I'm not sick. It's just...well, I've been doing a lot of thinking lately and now that you are off the X-Files, I don't have that fire for them like I once did. Don't get me wrong, Agent Doggett is a wonderful partner, but the office just isn't the same without you in it. I can't get anyone to argue with me anymore." She hid her slight grin behind her lengthy titian tresses.

"Are you telling me that you're leaving the Bureau, Scully? Is that what you are trying to say?" He stared at her, hopefulness reflecting in his eyes.

"Well, no, but I have asked Skinner to reassign me to Quantico. Agent Doggett will already have a new partner. However, that's only one reason I asked you over tonight. I actually have another one...if you are ready to hear it."

"By all means, Scully, please continue." She definitely had him intrigued.

Staring down at her stomach, she raised her eyes and met his own with a smile. "Mulder, would you please be my Lamaze coach?"

"You mean...you want me...to do. You really want me to do this, Scully?" He couldn't believe she had asked him. He figured she would ask her mother, Tara or her friend, Elaine. Granted, they were closer than ever now, especially since he had been returned from his abduction.

"Yes, Mulder, I want my child's father involved from the very beginning. I would expect nothing less from you." She took his hand and placed it on her stomach and he felt their child move inside her. His touch was gentle as she helped his hand migrate across her protruding belly.

Tears brimmed in his eyes as he stared at her lovingly. "Yes, Scully. I'll do this. Thank you so much for asking me. It means...a lot to me," he murmured. He stood from his chair and fell down to his knees in front of her. He cradled her stomach against his face and listened to the real, living breathing child they had created. There had been many miracles in their lives together over the past nine years, but this one was by far the best.
